Puerto Vallarta does not actually get hurricanes and the “simple” answer is that the bay protects us. However it gets the repercussions of them when they occur outside the bay. On October 25, 2002 Hurricane Kenna hit just north of PV in San Blas Nayarit, and what followed was a storm surge. This tsunami-like phenomenon sent massive waves into the bay up then up the streets of Puerto Vallarta. It swept away the main floor, and in some case the secod floor, of buildings several blocks inland. Cars and people were washed away in waist-deep floodwaters and storm debris  was piled high along the city’s shoreline.
